It appears that is what you are really asking for, magnification to get you closer to your subject. There is a fair consensus that you would need a focal length of about 600mm (35mm equivalent) to get that close. You would not need a zoom lens to achieve that. That is the wonderful thing about SLR cameras, you can change lenses to fit your shooting needs.
