What lens are needed for a canon 50d to get the equivalent of 12x optical zoom on a p&s digital camera?
I currently have a sony H5 and am upgrading to a canon 50d but I would like to get lens for it that can match or exceed the 12x optical zoom on my sony. So I was wondering what lens I would need to buy?

You should realize that the zoom in a camera is the difference between two focal lengths and NOT magnification. It appears that is what you are really asking for, magnification to get you closer to your subject. There is a fair consensus that you would need a focal length of about 600mm (35mm equivalent) to get that close. You would not need a zoom lens to achieve that. That is the wonderful thing about SLR cameras, you can change lenses to fit your shooting needs.
The closest would be the Canon 18-200 mm (11.1x), but since you are no "Stuck" with a single lens like your P&S Sony, the "x" factor is not a big deal. Many of the best lenses you will buy for your 50D will be prime lenses which under the P&S criteria is a 1x lens … not so hot if you are stuck with one lens, but some of the best you can find for your camera
Sigma makes an 18-250mm lens – 13.9X zoom factor.
As fhotoace said, however, you’ll likely want a couple of prime (fixed focal length) lenses like a 50mm f1.4 or 10mm f2.8.
The 18-200 is certainly a viable option, though closer or matching it would be the Tamron 18-270mm or Canon 28-300.
i recommend Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras
